Finding Federer – An introspection

Many of us aren’t avid sports enthusiasts. We find ourselves watching games only when influenced by friends, family, or captivating marketing campaigns. Personally, I often question whether investing time in watching sports outweighs pursuing my own interests like playing a sport, going for a run, reading a book, or painting. Yet, there’s an undeniable thrill in witnessing the best athletes compete against each other, offering valuable lessons through their peak performances. Watching great players is like attending an institution, teaching us about the game, teamwork, resilience, skill, and more. As spectators, we cheer for those who sweat in the arena, celebrating their moments of greatness with fervour.

But there’s more to it. Being able to recall specific games or moments grants us the coveted “bragging rights” in social settings. While topics like wine, cuisine, cars, bikes, and even Elon Musk dominate conversations, we often find ourselves engaged in lengthy discussions about social interests that hold significant importance to us.

While I acknowledge the necessity of discussing topics of mass interest for interpersonal bonding, I sometimes struggle to comprehend the excessive adulation bestowed upon others. Occasionally, I’ve experienced a sense of self-worthlessness despite the valuable lessons learned from observing exceptional athletes. However, there are exceptional individuals like Roger Federer who, through their performances and presence, inspire us to become better versions of ourselves. This article, “Discovering Federer,” pays tribute to Roger Federer as a fan’s introspection into #federerism—the virtues epitomised by Roger.

I find inspiration in various individuals, not exclusively athletes, many from a different era. My aim is to analyse their greatness and decode scientifically and statistically what makes them admirable and legendary. Is it their genes or privileges? (I hope to delve into these topics in future blog posts). Is it their struggles originating from their social class or economic circumstances? Or is it, quite simply, the result of their determination and hard work? How do these legends celebrate success and handle failure? How do they manage their practice routines and maintain their peak performance? Do they adapt as they progress, or does their purpose guide their path?

There is so much to learn from Roger Federer. He has redefined the coexistence of success and humility in competitive sports. Through this article, I attempt to decode the qualities that make Roger an enigma, hoping that we can embrace a bit of #federerism in our own pursuits.

  1. Stamina

Sustaining a long-term pursuit requires an unyielding reservoir of mojo. Stamina keeps us going through ups and downs, navigating the challenges and monotony. It’s what allows us to rise after every fall, endure setbacks without giving up, and maintain a positive outlook despite adversities. Stamina ensures that, in the end, we stand tall, ready to face the next day.

#Federerism involves developing stamina in the body, mind, and soul—recognizing that each requires a different kind of endurance.

Point To Ponder – Are we building stamina in all three dimensions—body, mind, and soul?

  1. Strength

To embark on a long-term pursuit, we must survive the short-term challenges. We need to seize each moment with strength, realizing that we may not get a second chance. It’s about making Day 1 count, leveraging our inner strength to make the most of the present.

#Federerism encourages the conscious pursuit of strength in the body, mind, and soul to seize the opportunities of the present.

Point to Ponder: What strengths do we possess and cultivate?

  1. Skill

Skill is the logical outcome of investing enough stamina and strength in a particular direction. The disciplined investment of time and energy in any particular direction accumulates as ‘Skill’. We must choose a direction where our heart points, but listen to our minds too. We must know our privileges, because when the direction we choose is aligned with our privileges, then we become a force to reckon with.

#Federerism tells us to pursue a direction with all our stamina and strength to acquire the right skills.

Point to Ponder – What is our pursuits for skilling ourselves?

  1. Strategy

Strategy involves striking a balance between Stamina, Strength, and Skill and using them effectively. It dictates how we consistently progress in our chosen direction. How much of each element should we employ? Where and when should we deploy them? What should we learn anew, and more importantly, what should we unlearn? Strategy requires foresight, allowing us to anticipate future challenges and prepare accordingly. It’s about aligning ourselves with our desired future and executing flawless moves.

#Federerism is a belief founded on knowledge, evolving into instinct, enabling us to act purposefully.

Point to Ponder: What is our strategy?

  1. Significance

Significance lies in the virtuousness we bring to the table, especially when it is unexpected. It goes beyond the self, encompassing the world in which we coexist with others. Significance is the energy that permeates everything—it may not be seen, but it’s felt. It’s a vibe, an aura that compels us to become more than we already are.

In an early 2000s interview, after Roger achieved a few victories, he realized that while he played to win for himself, he also played for the glory of the game. He began to believe that he had to inspire and set standards for others. Recognizing that millions of people, families, and children watched him, he understood the influence he had both on and off the court. His awareness of these expectations defined the significance of his being.

#Federerism entails finding purpose beyond ourselves and becoming significant to others.

Point to Ponder: What is our significance in life?

  1. Style

Fashion is fleeting and loud, while style is timeless and subtle. Celebrities epitomize fashion, but only a few stand out for their style. Thanks to Roger’s impeccable sportswear and sartorial elegance off the court, he exudes a unique style. Whether it’s the flick of his wrist, the sleek one-handed backhand, the agility of his serve, or his light-footed movements across the court, Roger’s style sets him apart. Throughout his career, he has favored understated elegance, often donning whites and blacks. The only area where he experimented with fashion was his hairdo—locks, ponytails, curls, and eventually settling for a more refined look.

#Federerism lies in embracing subtlety while cultivating a distinctive style.

Point to Ponder: What is our unique style in appearance and performance?

  1. Solitude

In today’s age of social media, public exposure is almost obligatory. Fear of missing out dominates our lives, and constant connection is deemed essential. While many celebrities rely on social and traditional media to promote their brand and endorse products aggressively, Roger avoids being consumed by the marketing machinery. He gracefully establishes solitude amidst the buzz.

#Federerism involves elegantly embracing solitude despite the attention required for our relevance.

Point to Ponder: How do we practice solitude while fulfilling the need for attention and relevance?

  1. Serenity

From a racket-throwing teenager to the embodiment of composure, how did Roger Federer find serenity?

In his early years, Roger was a hot-tempered player, often displaying his emotions through racquet-smashing and visible frustration. In an era where aggressive behavior gains viral attention, Roger chose a different path. He unlearned his temper and gradually transformed into the calm and composed Federer that we know today.

Competitive sports demand ambition, efficiency, and resilience. Stress runs high, and losing one’s cool becomes a common occurrence. Yet, amidst the fiery furnace of competition, against opponents with equal stamina, strength, and skill, Roger found serenity. Sustaining serenity consistently over two decades in a competitive sport is remarkable.

#Federerism lies in cultivating serenity within ourselves.

Point to Ponder: Are we able to maintain serenity in competitive environments and under stress?

  1. Sweetness

Roger brought humility and gentility to the world of competitive sports. His behavior on the court, whether in victory or defeat, has always been characterized by his gentlemanly and impeccable demeanor. Off the court, in interviews and interactions, he exudes joviality, courtesy, and genuine humility. Despite his extraordinary achievements, he displays respect and admiration for his peers. Occasionally, he even sheds tears in public, making him relatable and reminding us of his innate humanity.

#Federerism lies in embracing our human nature with its innocence and sweetness intact.

Point to Ponder: What sweetness do we bring to the world?

On September 15, 2022, Roger Federer bid farewell to professional tennis after more than two decades of dominating the game. I consider myself fortunate to have witnessed his exceptional career, to have seen him elevate the sport not only through his actions but also through his spirit and grace.

I wonder what an honour it would be to meet and spend time with the force that is Roger Federer.

Let #federerism guide us on our own journeys.
